Expert Goal Setting

Buying a Lambo or traveling the world is what you think of daily. You think, and you wish for them every day. You might have another dream you want to achieve and show pride to your friends and family.

If you don’t know how to set a great goal to help you achieve success, then go through this 5 minutes read. I am going to explain it very clearly, step by step.

5 Steps to Goal Setting

1. What Do You Want To Achieve?

Frederick Douglass quote about success, struggle and progressBefore starting, you should be clear and specific about your goal. What is it actually, and what is an action plan to achieve it? Once you have your goal in your mind, you need to materialize it by writing it on paper and sticking it in your room to get a reminder about it.

While setting your goal, you need to be laser specific, clear, and honest about whether you can achieve it. In other words, it should be attainable to aim for it. In this step, you should think of all the possible obstacles that might come your way.

Keeping them in your mind will enable you to devise a strategic plan to avoid them. Spending your time here might help you to spend less time on the next steps or the action stage itself.

If you want to start a business, you need to spend time learning it in the first place. The better you understand and plan for it, the higher your chances of success. Similarly, you can only go from a thousand-dollar startup to a million-dollar business after some time. So, you need to set some small monthly targets that are possible and easy to achieve.

2. Give Yourself A Strong “WHY”

“One man with courage makes a majority.” – Andrew JacksonOnce you are clear about your goal and know the roadmap well enough, you need a reason to start. You can say it’s the motivation that everyone needs to get started. No different than ignition, if done properly, this can help you move faster towards your goal.

We humans always stop working after working for a while. Mostly this is because we go through different levels of motivation daily. If you are highly motivated, you are working, but when you get slightly discouraged, you stop working.

This step is important to help you stay consistent as it gives you constant motivation whenever you feel low. If you go to the gym daily, you might not feel motivated after continuously working out for a week. However, if you are rejected from your dream job due to not being physically fit, you have a strong “WHY.”

You will work out for hours with great motivation because you know your reason well enough. In short, giving yourself a reason to achieve your desired goal drastically increases your success rate.

3. Long and Short-Term Plan

Boone Pickens quote about having a goalWhen setting your goal, you need to be foresighted. You must have a short-term and long-term plan for your business. According to T. Boone Pickens, “A fool with a plan is better than a genius without one!”

This is why you need a proper plan for everything you should do. How would you have a short-term or long-term plan? It’s so easy. Setting up your schedule today in the morning for the whole day or week is a short-term plan to get going toward your goal.

However, you must have a proper long-term goal to track your growth and be the industry giant. Setting your target for the whole month, year, or next year is moderately long-term thinking. Most companies and entrepreneurs tend to set goals for the next 5 or 10 years and act accordingly.

Having a long-term goal also keeps you motivated and active. For example, if I say my goal is to be a millionaire in the next 5 years, this will light me up and motivate me to work daily.

4. Time-Bound / Parkinson’s Principle

Time-Bound Parkinson’s PrincipleMost importantly, your goals must be time-bound. For example, I want to start my coaching business by the end of next month. This will help you to struggle and stick to your deadlines.

If you still wonder why time bound is important, then focus on what Parkinson’s law says, “Work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion.”

The same 1-hour task can take 3 hours if you don’t tighten your time limits and make it time-bound. Always challenge yourself to the time allocated.

5. Take Action Every Day

Last but not least, take action and work for it every day. Goals are never meant to be made only; they must be achieved.

You can never be successful if you don’t follow the plan to achieve your goals. Show up every day and work like a super-human. Take short breaks and stay focused on your goal. If you follow these steps to set your goals, you will be a great entrepreneur soon.

Setting up your goals is very important to achieve them successfully. According to research, the goal-setting mechanism impacts the employees’ proactive behavior.
